A man suspected of a deadly knife attack on a 17-year-old Afghan in northern Germany earlier this year has been detained in the United Kingdom, German prosecutors said on Wednesday.
The suspect was arrested on Saturday by British police acting on information from the criminal police office in the north-eastern German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The man allegedly stabbed the teenager outside a mall in the state’s capital, Schwerin, on February 4. The victim died from his injuries in hospital.
Authorities said days later that an arrest warrant had been issued for a 25-year-old Afghan.
Investigators believe the man fled to France before reaching Britain, said a spokeswoman for the Schwerin public prosecutor’s office.
German authorities have asked their British counterparts to extradite the man, she added.
